Who is Axles And Antennas?

Who is Axles and Antennas and why should you care or trust me?

Glad you asked! My name is James (not Jim) and I have been around radio in some fashion since about 1992 when a bunch of school buddies and I got our hands on some CBs. This being prior to widespread use of cell phones, it was pretty cool to just sit around and talk without our parents complaining about us hogging the phone line.

Sometime later, not sure when, we discovered Amateur (ham) Radio. From our young standpoint, this was pretty cool! After studying for the test, we all got our callsigns which at the time mine was . My parents bought me a hand held 2 meter (VHF) radio soon thereafter and I was hooked.

In 1995, I joined the US Marines. As a Marine, I held a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of Infantry (0311), Scout-Sniper (8541), & Primary Marksmanship Instructor (8531). Within each MOS, I gained knowledge and expertise in not only marksmanship, but leadership, map reading, land navigation, route planing, radio operation, and a variety of other field craft skills. I originally ended my active duty service as Sergeant (E-5) in 1999 but was then reactivated following 9/11 for an additional year.

I graduated from the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!) in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography with an emphasis in Cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Maps and map making has been an interest of mine since I was a child in the 80s and started work professionally in 2005 as a route planner and GIS Analysis. I later worked for Department of Energy (DOE) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) contractors as a cartographer and GIS Analyst.

My goal with Axles And Antennas is to help overlanders, adventure travelers, and weekend trail riders find a place to gain the correct basic information pertaining to all forms of vehicle based communications. Additionally, as a cartographer, I also intend to expand our selection of maps and mapping products to better suit the outdoor enthusiast and help instruct those who would like to know more about using paper based maps.
